Safety advice for dealing with gas problems and engineers

CORGI registered gas engineers no longer exist in Britain, instead a legally registered gas engineer will have an ID card that looks like the sample shown on this page. We also offer gas safety checks, installations and repairs for touring caravans, mobile homes, static caravans, domestic homes and holiday homes. Never allow an engineer to enter your home without requesting the applicable identification.
  • Remember to always check the engineers' details on the gas safe card / take note of the details should you need to reference them later.
  • Check that the picture on the card resembles the person presenting it, if it does not, do not let them proceed with any work. If in doubt call the Gas Safe helpline on 0800 111 999.
  • Check that the card is in date. If it is not, do not let the engineer proceed with any work and make a note of the name and licence number and call Gas Safe on 0800 111 999.
  • Check the back of the card where the list of appliances that the engineer can work on is displayed. If the appliance you require the work to be completed on is not listed on the card, do not let them proceed with any work on that appliance.

Safety Advice

Always use a GAS SAFE registered engineer when installing or repairing a gas appliance. If you believe you can smell gas:

  • Turn the gas supply off immediately at the meter handles
  • Extinguish all sources of ignition
  • Do NOT smoke
  • Do NOT operate electrical light or power switches
  • If necessary, ventilate the building by opening windows and doors
  • Report the gas escape to Transco on 0800 111 999

For energy efficiency, have the boiler serviced each year, the summer being the best time.

Having attended many central heating breakdowns in the North East, AP Plumbing & Gas Services recommend the following heating tips to help prevent central heating breakdowns. For energy efficiency:

  • Have the boiler serviced annually - the summer is the best time - GAS SAFE registered engineers are extremely busy during the winter
  • Check the timer/programmer is set correctly
  • Fit thermostatic radiator valves in all rooms to allow you to control temperatures - don't heat up rooms unnecessarily
  • Ensure all pipes are lagged/insulated correctly
  • Insulate your loft - most heat escapes through your roof
  • Check for drafts around windows, doors and letterboxes - insulate if necessary
  • Older boilers can be inefficient - modern combination or condensing boilers are much more energy efficient
If you do need to call an engineer at any time, always make sure he is GAS SAFE registered and ask to see his GAS SAFE registration card - he should carry this with him at all times. If you are in any doubt, you can contact GAS SAFE directly to check that your installer is registered on 0800 111 999.
